What are cookies?
Cookies are small pieces of information stored on your computer, phone, tablet or other device when you visit a website. They can allow a website to recognise your browser or device, maintain a secure session, remember choices you have made, provide requested functionality and understand how the website is being used.
Some cookies exist only while your browser remains open and are deleted when the session ends. These are known as session cookies. Others remain on your device for a set period or until you delete them and are known as persistent cookies.
Cookies may also be described as first-party cookies, where they are placed by the website you are visiting, or third-party cookies, where they are placed or accessed by another organisation whose service or technology is being used.
Cookies and similar technologies
This policy uses the term “cookies” for convenience, but similar legal rules can apply to other technologies that store information on or access information from your device.
These technologies may include tracking pixels, web storage, scripts, tags, link tracking and similar tools.
The UK rules are not limited to traditional browser cookies. The ICO's current guidance expressly covers cookies, tracking pixels, link decoration, web storage, fingerprinting techniques, scripts and tags.
Why kayhart.co.uk uses cookies
Cookies and similar technologies may be used to keep the website secure and functioning correctly; remember your cookie choices; support forms, member accounts and community areas; operate booking, checkout and payment features; provide requested website functionality; understand how the website is being used; identify and resolve technical problems; and, where applicable, support third-party integrations.
The cookies used during a particular visit may depend on the pages you view, the features you use, whether you are signed into a member account and the choices you make through the cookie banner.
Essential cookies
Essential cookies are used where they are necessary to operate the website or provide a service you have requested.
They may be required for website security, fraud prevention, consent preferences, session management, member login, account authentication, forms, bookings, checkout and payment functions.
These cookies do not normally require consent where their use falls within the applicable legal exception because the relevant service could not function properly without them.
For example, the ICO recognises technologies used to maintain a logged-in session, remember shopping-basket information and remember cookie-consent choices as examples that may qualify as strictly necessary.
Blocking essential cookies through your browser may prevent parts of kayhart.co.uk from working correctly.
Functional cookies
Functional cookies support additional website features and may remember choices you make when using the site.
Depending on the function involved, these technologies may require your consent. Where consent is required, they will not be used unless you have allowed them through the website's cookie controls.
UK law also contains a limited exception for certain technologies used solely to adapt the appearance or functionality of an online service to a person's preference. Where that exception is relied upon, visitors must still receive clear information and a simple and free way to object.
Analytics and statistical cookies
Analytics technologies may help me understand how kayhart.co.uk is used and where the website could be improved.
This may include aggregated information about matters such as which pages receive visits, how visitors move between pages, device and browser types, referral sources, page-loading performance, approximate geographical information and general interaction with the website.
Where an analytics technology requires consent, it will only be used after the appropriate consent has been given.
UK law now also permits a limited statistical purposes exception for certain analytics technologies. This can apply where the sole purpose is to collect statistical information about how a website or online service is used in order to improve it, the resulting information is appropriately aggregated, and visitors are provided with clear information and a simple, free way to object.
The exception does not apply to profiling individual visitors, monitoring individual browsing histories, measuring advertising behaviour, connecting visitor identities to advertising conversions or tracking people across different websites or services. Those uses require consent where the law requires it.
Marketing cookies
Marketing cookies or similar technologies may be used if the website uses an advertising, campaign-measurement or marketing integration that requires them.
These technologies may be capable of measuring advertising activity, recognising visitors or understanding activity across websites.
Where marketing cookies require consent, they will remain disabled unless you choose to allow them.
I do not rely on the statistical analytics exception to conduct behavioural advertising, profiling or cross-site tracking. The ICO specifically excludes online advertising and individual tracking from the statistical purposes exception.
Wix
kayhart.co.uk is built and hosted using Wix.
Wix provides the technology used for website hosting, security, forms, CRM functionality, member accounts, community features, bookings, payments, invoicing and other website functions.
As a result, Wix may place or access cookies and similar technologies when you use the website.
Wix identifies cookies used for purposes including website security, stability, fraud and attack detection, session management, rendering, authentication and platform operation. Some Wix cookies are essential, while others may depend on the features and apps enabled on the website.
Wix also provides the cookie-consent functionality used to allow visitors to accept or decline non-essential cookies.
Because Wix may update its technology from time to time, individual cookie names or durations can change without the underlying purpose of this policy changing.
Member accounts and The Literary Community
Parts of kayhart.co.uk may use Wix member functionality, including features connected with The Literary Community and The Scribblers’ Parlour.
If you create an account or sign in, cookies and similar technologies may be necessary to recognise your session, authenticate your account, maintain security and provide the member functionality you have requested.
Essential account and authentication technologies may operate without optional-cookie consent where they are necessary to provide the requested service.
More information about how member information is handled is available in the Privacy Policy.
Wix Bookings
Wix Bookings may be used to arrange Editorial Consultations and other services offered through Red Pen Editorial.
Cookies or similar technologies may be required to maintain a booking session, process information between booking pages, provide checkout functionality, remember necessary selections and protect the booking process from fraud or misuse.
Where optional analytics or other non-essential technologies are associated with the booking process, they will be subject to the applicable cookie choices.
Wix Payments
Payments for editorial services may be processed using Wix Payments and associated payment-processing providers.
Payment and checkout services may use essential security, authentication and fraud-prevention technologies where necessary to process a transaction you have requested.
I do not receive or store your full payment-card details.
Further information about payment-related personal information is contained in the Privacy Policy.
Forms and enquiries
kayhart.co.uk contains forms that may be used for general contact enquiries, Red Pen Editorial enquiries, full-script requests, bookings, event registrations, community participation and mailing-list subscriptions.
Cookies or session technologies may be used where necessary to operate the form securely, prevent abuse or process a submission.
Submitting a form does not automatically mean that you consent to marketing cookies or marketing emails.
The Paper Trail and The Bookmarked Society
The Paper Trail and The Bookmarked Society each have their own Mailchimp subscription list.
Mailchimp is used to manage subscribers and deliver those email communications.
If Mailchimp functionality is embedded into or accessed through kayhart.co.uk, Mailchimp may use cookies or similar technologies as part of providing that service.
Mailchimp emails may also contain tracking technologies, such as pixels or tracked links, where those features are enabled. These can provide information about matters such as email delivery, opens or link interactions.
These email technologies are not necessarily cookies stored directly by kayhart.co.uk, but they are mentioned here because they may involve similar tracking mechanisms.
You can unsubscribe from either mailing list using the unsubscribe link included in the relevant email. Unsubscribing from one list does not automatically unsubscribe you from the other if you separately subscribed to both.
Further information about mailing-list information is available in the Privacy Policy.
kayhart.co.uk may contain integrations, embedded content or links involving third-party services.
A normal link to another website does not mean that the destination website's cookies are placed on your device merely because the link appears on kayhart.co.uk. Once you leave this website, the other organisation's cookie and privacy policies apply.
Where third-party content or technology is embedded directly into kayhart.co.uk, the relevant third party may be able to place or access cookies or similar technologies.
Where those technologies are non-essential and consent is legally required, they should only operate in accordance with the choice you have made through the website's consent controls.
Services that may be linked to or used in connection with the website include Wix, Mailchimp, Zoom, Google Meet and social-media platforms.
The legal rules that apply
The use of cookies and similar storage and access technologies in the United Kingdom is principally governed by the Privacy and Electronic Communications Regulations 2003 (PECR). Where the use of those technologies also involves personal data, the UK GDPR and Data Protection Act 2018 may also apply.
The general rule under PECR is that clear information must be provided and consent obtained before information is stored on or accessed from a person's device unless a recognised legal exception applies.
The ICO finalised updated guidance on these technologies on 29 April 2026, incorporating changes introduced by the Data (Use and Access) Act.
Your cookie choices
Where consent is required, kayhart.co.uk provides cookie controls allowing you to make a choice about non-essential technologies.
Depending on the technologies enabled on the website, you may be able to accept optional cookies, reject optional cookies or customise particular categories.
Essential technologies remain available where they are necessary to operate the website or provide a service you have requested.
Where I rely on one of the newer statutory exceptions that requires visitors to be able to object, the website will provide the required simple and free means of doing so.
Wix records choices made through its Cookie Banner in its consent log, including whether a visitor agreed to or refused relevant uses.
Changing your cookie preferences
You can change or withdraw your cookie choices at any time using the Cookie Settings, Privacy Settings or equivalent control available on kayhart.co.uk.
Changing a preference applies to future use of the relevant technology. It does not retrospectively make previous lawful processing invalid.
You may also need to delete previously stored cookies through your browser if you want to remove them immediately from your device.
Managing cookies in your browser
Most web browsers allow you to view, block or delete cookies through their privacy or security settings.
You may be able to block cookies from particular websites, prevent third-party cookies, delete existing cookies or prevent all cookies from being stored.
Blocking all cookies may affect the operation of kayhart.co.uk. In particular, member accounts, forms, bookings, checkout, payments and other features may not function properly if technologies necessary to provide them are disabled.
How long cookies remain on your device
The length of time a cookie remains on your device depends on its purpose and configuration.
Session cookies generally expire when you close your browser. Persistent cookies remain for a specified period or until they are deleted.
Wix uses a mixture of session and persistent technologies for its platform. The duration of individual Wix or third-party cookies may change when those providers update their systems.
Where an exact duration is important to your decision about an optional cookie, the current information displayed through the website's cookie controls or the relevant provider's cookie information should be consulted.
Cookie preference and consent records
When you make a cookie choice, the website may need to store information about that choice so that it does not repeatedly ask you the same question and so that your preference can be respected.
Wix's Privacy Center records visitor consent choices made through its Cookie Banner.
These records are used for consent and preference administration and are not treated as permission to use your information for unrelated purposes.
Personal information and cookies
Some cookies and similar technologies may involve information that constitutes personal data, such as an IP address, device identifier, account identifier or website activity associated with an identifiable individual.
Where personal data is processed, it will be handled in accordance with the Privacy Policy and applicable UK data-protection law.
Age restriction
kayhart.co.uk and its content and services are intended only for people aged 18 or over.
This includes member and community features, mailing lists, editorial services, bookings, events and full-script requests.
The site's 18+ restriction does not remove or reduce the privacy and cookie protections that apply to visitors.
I do not sell your personal information
I do not sell personal information collected through kayhart.co.uk.
Where information is processed by providers such as Wix or Mailchimp, it is processed in connection with the services and technology they provide and subject to the applicable privacy arrangements.
Changes to this Cookie Policy
I may update this Cookie Policy from time to time to reflect changes to kayhart.co.uk, Wix functionality, third-party services, the technologies being used or applicable legal requirements.
The Last updated date at the top of this page will show when the policy was most recently revised.
Where a significant change affects the basis on which optional cookies are used, visitors may be asked to make their choices again where appropriate.
